Why apples are so popular
Apples are probably the most popular type of fruit in the world today. Along with oranges, apples are exported to every continent, although this wasn’t always the case just 50 years ago. Back then, apples were mainly consumed in temperate countries, and due to limited refrigeration and preservation costs, apples were not as cheap and available as they are today.
But aside from the easing of cold storage costs, it is not hard to see why apples are loved by people everywhere. They are crunchy, sweet, and a healthful snack at any time of the day or night. The saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” is not without merit, because apples contain a whole host of nutrients and vitamins and enzymes which are much needed by our bodies.
Another factor behind the popularity of apples is the ease of planting apple trees. There are many types of apples or cultivars which you can easily grow in your garden as trees, and most types will bear fruit within a few years. Therefore it is not uncommon to see many gardens planted with apple trees.
The large variety of apples available today is testament to the popularity of apples, and also contributes to its continuing popularity. Be it classics like Fuji, Granny Smith, or Red Delicious, or some of the newer hybrids (or cultivars), apples never fail to captivate people with their red coated, crispy, crunchy deliciousness!
