A type of insect that eats wood and resembles ants is the termite. Termites are one of the oldest insects on earth and resemble ants in many ways. They live in large communities with a defined hierarchy of royals and workers. But unlike ants, termites eat exclusively wood and other plant matter, whereas ants are mostly omnivorous, with few exceptions.
Termites are normally pale or whitish in color, and have softer bodies and wider waists. They avoid light and are blind. Ants on the other hand, have eyes and more amoured bodies. The differences are rather obvious. Learn more about termite identification here.
Why you should know how to identify termites from ants is because if you find termites in your home, the chances are your home may not be secure anymore as they could be under attack from termites. Although not every termite species attacks human structures (only a few do), those species that do can reduce your home to a hollow shell. By knowing whether termites are affecting your home or not, you can better take remedial measures to protect your home from termite attack.
